Bryce poured a bottle of water over his head and it felt damn good. When he threw his head and hair back, he was presented with a fresh bottle of beer and a hug from Harlan.

“That was amazing,” Harlan cried out.

Bryce hugged Harlan for a few seconds and then pushed him away. “Good show.” He looked at Maxx. “Right?”

“Good show,” Maxx said.

“Hey, listen,” Harlan said. “I have to go deal with something. I’ll be right back. Are we partying tonight?”

“No,” Bryce said. “I’m not at least. I have somewhere to be."

“Oh yea? Where the hell are you going?” Maxx asked.

“None of your business, man. I just have stuff to take care of."

Maxx stepped forward. He put a hand to Bryce’s shoulder and nodded. “Yeah, you go take care of your stuff.”

“Let it go, Maxx. We have bigger things to think about.”

“Like your guy?”

“Maxx, he’s our guy. I keep saying that. You don’t listen.”

“Let me call him.”

“Yeah, right.”

“You don’t trust me? Don’t think I’m big enough for this?”

Bryce shook his head. “What’s with you? I mean, one second you talk to me and open up a little and then the next you want to fight.”

“Then let’s fight,” Maxx said. “Right now.”

Maxx backed up and put up his fists.

“Are you kidding me?” Bryce asked.

“You took the first round. I want to get the second.”

Bryce swigged a mouthful of beer and spit it at Maxx.

“You’re an asshole,” Maxx growled.

He came at Bryce and Bryce let it happen. Maxx threw his shoulder into Bryce and lifted him off the ground. He slammed Bryce against the wall, and then brought him down on a table, breaking it in half.

Suddenly, there were a shouts of people calling for help to break up the fight and Bryce looked up at Maxx on him. Bryce had about ten chances to knock Maxx back on his ass. But he didn’t. Maxx came down with a left and hit Bryce in the cheek.

“Harder than that, man,” Bryce said. “You hit like a girl.”

Maxx punched again and opened Bryce’s lip.

Harlan and Cory grabbed Maxx and pulled him off. They stood him up. Little Mikey was there too and offered a hand to Bryce. He helped Bryce up and Bryce wiped his lip.

“You made me bleed,” Bryce said. “You’re almost a man.”

Maxx growled and tried to push forward.

As Bryce stood there he realized he was just letting Maxx do this to feel good about himself. Because Bryce was wrong here, not Maxx. Bryce deserved the punch in the face and plenty more for what he was doing behind everyone’s back.

He thought of Clara and knew he was going to be with her tonight. He was going to be inside her soon enough.

“Tell your guy to piss off then,” Maxx said.

“What is going on with you two?” Harlan said. “I turned my back…”

“He’s mad because he couldn’t protect Clara.”

“Yeah,” Maxx said. “At least I wasn’t her puppy for all those years…”

Everyone let out a gasp.

Bryce didn't know what he was doing until he was right there, slamming his head against Maxx’s face.
